Green tea and ADHD

Many parents are turning to green tea for ADHD kids due to its calming effect. In this article, you'll learn about its other benefits, when to give it to your child and how to use it with other medications or natural supplements that your child may be taking.

The active ingredient in green tea is an amino acid called L-theanine which regulates the transmission of alpha waves in the brain and has a calming and focusing effect. Herbalists in Japan use green tea to treat children with ADHD with positive results. In fact, studies have shown that it is as effective as Ritalin, but has a milder stimulating effect and is non-habit forming. Since it is completely natural, you don't have to worry about drug interactions if your child is taking prescription drugs.

ADHD Green Tea Benefits

  • Promotes deep, restful sleep.
  • Calms the mind and focuses attention without affecting alertness.
  • Increases learning and concentration.

In addition to these three big benefits for kids with ADHD, green tea also boosts the immunity and contains plenty of antioxidants for heart and brain health. Since green tea is considered a mild stimulant, you can give it to young children without any health risks. Children as young as two years old have been drinking it in Japan for hundreds of years without any health risks.

Green tea for ADHD may be especially helpful for kids who struggle with concentrating and finishing the task at hand, but don't have more serious symptoms associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. While these kids may have issues, their symptoms are not serious enough to be given prescription drugs.

The best time to give ADHD green tea is in the late afternoon or early evening. Giving your child green tea or supplements can actually make for deeper, most restful sleep which will allow your child to perform better at school and at home the next day.
